Last Seen in Lhasa
By Claire Scobie
ISBN: 9781846040054
This is an amazing, very real, true story - amazing because
it is difficult to comprehend how any human can survive with so
little and in such harsh conditions, and very real because of the
way Claire has so carefully collected, interviewed, translated and
finally delivered her story to us, the reader. Last Seen in Lhasa chronicles Claire’s journeys to Tibet from her first visit in search
of a rare red lily, to subsequent visits where she returns to travel
and be with Ani, a Tibetan nun. I really learnt a lot about the
geography and terrain of Tibet and surrounding areas, and the
political oppression of the Tibetan people. However the focus of Last Seen in Lhasa is Claire’s very special relationship with
Ani (neither can speak each other’s language so an interpreter
always has to be present) who gives Claire a totally new perspective
on inner (and outer) strength. I found this book to be a really
outstanding read – except for the ending!
